Detention specialists are tasked with monitoring and keeping track of inmates and staff within the detention facility. The individual must possess a strong knowledge of computer systems, particularly MS Office Suite.They must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, ensuring positive and effective interactions. The ability to multi-task is essential. Effective communication skills, both written and oral, are critical for conveying information clearly and professionally. Must be able to maintain confidentiality, ensuring sensitive information is protected at all times. Finally, the individual must be capable of interacting effectively with diverse groups and individuals, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment

Salary

This position is pays at a salary range of $51,094.99-$71,532.99 annually

A Detention Specialist maintains the security of the jail (in our control towers) while preserving order to ensure the safety and welfare of staff, visitors, and inmates. This position requires no physical inmate contact. The main responsibilities for Detention Specialists are inmate accountability, inmate safety, and staff safety.

  1. Adhere to policy, procedures, and post orders.
  2. Duties include but not limited to, answer calls for service; complete appropriate and required paperwork; testify in court; resolve conflict; complete required training; communicate clearly with citizens and other law enforcement professionals; dispense information to those who need it
  3. Prepare variety of reports
  4. Observation of Activities for safety of Sheriff’s Office staff, contract staff and inmates.
  5. Communicate by using the computer, telephone, two-way radio and intercom systems.
  6. Monitor and Record Inmate access (through the control towers) and movement to and from the modules, Individual pods, visiting areas, master control and booking control.
  7. Operate Control panels and emergency alarm systems
  8. Control access between front entrance, rear entrance and other secured areas of the Detention Facility.
  9. Maintain balance of inmates using a roster, computer log, and physical count
  10. Notify Sergeant of Emergency Situations. Contact other agencies that are needed, i.e. (SWAT, Ambulance, Fire Dept, etc)
  11. Perform other duties that are assigned

Requirements:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Must have a High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid Colorado Drivers License

Working Conditions:

  • A Platoon Shift:
    • Sunday- Tuesday and every other Wednesday.
  • B Platoon Shift:
    • Thursday-Saturday and every other Wednesday. Each platoon has two shifts. Day Shift- 0645-1900 Night Shift 1845-0700. Shifts rotate from day shift to night shift every 3 months.

  • Scheduling the written exam is up to you for your convenience. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office typically holds Cadet / Lateral Deputy oral board interviews twice a month, and all other position oral board interviews once monthly. If an applicant proceeds past the oral board interview step, you are requested to provide a detailed packet to begin the background investigation process. If all of the requested documents and details are adequately provided, background investigations will take between 45 and 60 business days.
  • Yes. Lateral Officers with patrol experience are allowed to start on patrol at the discretion of the Sheriff. Lateral Officers without patrol experience will be asked to first complete the Jail FTO process and request a transfer after training is completed successfully.
  • No. Cadets hired by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office are sponsored by the agency. Not only that, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office pays Adams County Cadets while they complete the P.O.S.T. certification courses.
  • Yes. We ask cadets being sponsored to attend the FLATROCK Regional Training Center academy to commit 2 year to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. The 2 year contract includes the 22 week academy.
  • Adams County is located right in the heart of the Denver Metro area. Employees live in all of the surrounding areas to include Douglas County, Jefferson County, Boulder County, Weld County, Broomfield County, Morgan County, Elbert Count, Larimer County and El Paso County. It is completely up to you where you want to live. There is no minimum distance employees are required to live for employment.
  • We require all trainees to complete the Jail FTO(Field Training) program. The Jail FTO program typically takes 3 to 4 months to complete. After successfully completing the Jail FTO program you are eligible to put in a transfer request to Patrol. Agency Lateral Deputies without patrol experience will also be asked to complete the Jail FTO program before advancing to the Patrol Division.
  • No. We have had many senior cadets successfully complete the academy.
