Knowledge & Ability to:
- Must possess a thorough understanding of and strict adherence to policies, procedures, and post orders. Candidates must have the ability to effectively protect life and property, prevent crimes, and apprehend criminals. This role requires proficiency in handling calls for service, completing all necessary paperwork, and providing clear testimony in court. Deputies must be skilled in conflict resolution, clear communication with citizens and law enforcement professionals, and the dissemination of crucial information. Deputies must be competent in conducting preliminary investigations, administering first aid, gathering evidence, and managing traffic control at scenes of incidents. The ability to serve civil papers, court documents, and subpoenas, as well as participate in annual and quarterly law enforcement training and certifications, is essential.

Salary
Lateral pay is based off of prior certified law enforcement experience. Those with less than one year of experience or those that recently graduated an academy will start at the base deputy pay of $77,571.54. Others with 1 or more years will start at the following:

- 1 year: $82,225.30
- 2 years: $86,879.56
- 3 years: $91,533.83
- 4 years: $96,188.09
- 5+ years: $100,842.35
- New deputies with 5+ years of experience will reach top out pay of $108,599 after 1-2 years of service with Adams County
Definition
A Deputy Sheriff is responsible for the protection of life and property; prevention of crime; apprehension of criminals; and providing enforcement of laws and ordinances. Depending on staffing needs, Deputies will be assigned to the Jail Division or the Patrol Division. Candidates with prior patrol experience will be allowed to start on patrol at the discretion of the Sheriff. All other candidates will be asked to complete Jail Field Training (4-month time frame) before being allowed to test for transfers to patrol, courts, detectives, or any other special assignments

Class Characteristics
Candidates with 1 or more years of experience and are POST Certified.

Examples of Duties
- Adhere to policy, procedures, and post orders.
- Responsible for the protection of life and property; prevention of crimes; apprehension of criminals
- Duties include but not limited to, answer calls for service; complete appropriate and required paperwork; testify in court; resolve conflict; complete required training; communicate clearly with citizens and other law enforcement professionals; dispense information to those who need it.
- Enforce Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations.
- Patrol assigned area to enforce laws, investigate crimes, and arrest violators.
- Investigate illegal or suspicious activities or persons, quell disturbances, arrest violators.
- Conduct preliminary investigation at the scene of a crime, administer first aid, and gather evidence
- Establish traffic control and Deputy protection at incidents that may attract crowds.
- Participate and complete 16 hours of annual training in the area of P.P.C.T. (Must be certified every quarter).
- Perform other duties that are assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Possess a High School Diploma or GED
- Must currently be P.O.S.T. Certified with at least 1 year of applicable experience (Applicants with less than one year of experience please see Deputy Entry level Posting)
Other Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Possess a valid Colorado Drivers’ License
- Must have vision correctable to 20/40
- Must meet criteria established by P.O.S.T. if you are a Non-United States Citizen
Working Shifts
Standard Shift Information:
- A Platoon Patrol:
- Sunday- Wednesday. 4-10 hour shifts. Shifts rotate from days to swings to graves every 4 Months
- B Platoon Patrol:
- Wednesday- Saturday. 4-10 hour shifts. Shifts rotate from days to swings to graves every 4 Months
- A Platoon Jail:
- Sunday- Tuesday/ every other Wednesday- 12 Hour shifts. Shifts rotate from days to graves every 3 months.
- B Platoon Jail:
- Thursday-Saturday/ every other Wednesday- 12 Hour shifts. Shifts rotate from days to graves every 3 months
Out of State Applicants
If you are a POST certified officer in another state, but not in Colorado you still qualify.
A Colorado POST Certification can be obtained by the lateral by challenging the POST Certification Test within a reasonable time after being hired. Lateral applicants must be able to meet the Provisional Certification Requirements. Questions regarding Colorado POST certification may be answered by calling (720) 508-6721.
Applicants must apply for the provisional certification prior to advancing through the background phase of the hiring process. You have 6 months from receiving your provisional certificate to successfully challenge the Colorado POST. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office will make arrangements for you and work to prepare you for the testing process to help ensure your success. You will start with a Field Training Officer (FTO) and be paid your designated salary while you are waiting to challenge the POST test.
